King For A Day

Submitted by Alex Birch on Mon, 06/09/2008 - 17:21.

As people have even less of importance to do with their time, idol shows have taken over daytime television. "Survivor" and "American Idol" exemplify this mouth-breathing trend, where young people sing off-key or "survive" in a backyard jungle, competing with each other for their 15 minutes of fame. Every peasant dreams of being a celebrity king. But the career idols today can't sing and have nothing meaningful to say with their music. Most of them would be sodomized by primitive tribes or eaten up by tigers in a real jungle, but the TV crew is there to prevent natural selection. These wannabes seek TV fameto express their egos - and the audience watches to forget their own boring peon days. It's the perfect lifestyle for producers and corporate bosses alike, because they make big bucks on your misery through shows that are cheap to produce. You think you'll become famous? Think again.

Peasant idol

First, it's like a lottery - 99 % of the people don't make it. They lack any talent or personality to fit in a successful pop band. Second, you'll only be famous for a short period of time, after that, no one could care less about you or your "talents," except the press, who'll document your increasing desperation for attention and expose your neurotic private life to millions of other clueless idiots. Third, no one cares about you in that business. You're there to either produce the standard pop album, or make a fool of yourself on TV and create some drama for the audience. They'll laugh at you when you're being bullied, pop popcorn when you shower naked, and boo at you when you make a mistake. People love these idol shows because they promote ordinary people to the position of judges. It's democracy in show business form.

The sad aspect of this trend concerns the future of the younger generations. They are being brought up on false hope. Their parents tell them they'll succeed at school, because they're equal. The economists say they'll be able to take loans and buy houses and cars, because they're equal. The politicians tell them they can exert power and make a change, because they're equal. The TV producers tell them they can get famous, because they're equal. And then they face the brutal reality: no one's equal, especially not in this world. You actually need -- OMG -- talent and dedication and, like, a direction in life. With reality shows, you either exploit others, or get exploited yourself. It's a vicious money game that has destroyed the lives of many, and many lives yet to come.

The hidden entertainment of reality TV is watching the audience. They are slaves who dream the impossible dream of suddenly becoming something they're not. The only reason this motivates them is their total lack of clue and talent, which means the only dream they can have is of the impossible, a near-religious experience where the hand of television god delivers them from themselves. Want to succeed at Survivor? Flash your tits to convince people to stay on your side. You need to keep the audience interested, or else they'll vote you out. And maybe, by the end of the show, you'll be the winner - but of what? Forgotten in a month, you've discovered true equality in being more discarded trash of a now-abandoned trend. Now you go back to your old peasant life, wondering why you ever thought you'd become the next Madonna. Repeat after me: King for a day, fool for a lifetime.
