This (video?) isn't showing anymore. (On my computer at least.)
For those who'd be interested, the title of this post comes from chapter 6 of Driscoll's book about the crisis of vanishing manhood in America, "Porn-Again Christian": http://relit.org/porn_again_christian/ch6.php
Mark Driscoll on corrupt.org? Never thought I'd see the day. Thanks for sharing...
I agree with the oversimplification argument. Fundamentalists generally aren't the deepest of thinkers. But, I would have to agree with Mark that there are too many adult males who are infantile in their approach to life.
Good for him that he's challenging those males in his megachurch and through his online ministry with this.
I think he challenges the nonsense bluntly (the materialistic excess and accepted juvenile behavior). Overall the point he's making is accurate (while obviously being presented in a Christian framework). I enjoyed watching.
The video has some debatable points (ie. the givers/consumers dichotomy which is entirely symbolic; since married with children doesn't make you any less of a consumer - it just changes your demographic group) - but overall, I think it was a pretty good and honest video, even with the Christian dogmatism.
to move out of the house you need a get a good job
to finish school, you will need money, so if nobody pays for you, you will need a rip off student loan, or a good job.
to get a good job requires formal education or training, so see step 2. and with a collapsed market, nothing but crappy joe-jobs are available, the same ones he says doesn't qualify...try again next time
get a girl, court her, marry her - usually requires 1 and 3
have kids - requires 1, 3 and obviously 4
how times change. no wonder people get trapped in adolescence, they can't find good jobs, feel that they can't afford to move out of their parents homes and because of this can't find women. more and more people with formal education are finding themselves trapped at gas stations and macdonalds struggling to pay their student loans. People are ready for the real world and responsibilities, they just don't feel those responsibilities presenting themselves to them. So with nothing better to do, they work menial jobs and come home to play video games till their next shift. and since their student loans are so expensive, they save on rent money at home with ma and pa.
But this is oversimplified religious tripe I hate. Religious people are not inherently more moral then secular people, the worst part about it is if we found out later that the guy doing the preaching is getting laid like mofo on the side and just loves his porn, and had some curious kiddie porn on his computer.
Most every guy on earth LOVES porn, they did a study on this a while back and they could NOT find a male since the advent of the internet in north america that had NEVER viewed porn and I bet if we could be the invisible ghost hawking what this guy does in real life he'd instantly be found a hypocrite.
While he rags on guys, what about the girls? Many guys are turned into pussies because young women are just inhuman in their cruelty towards guys. Christian females today are certainly not very Christian I can tell you that for certain from all the easy lays I've had from those "good girls", good girls are some of the most repressed, and hence the most kinky they are just brimming with all that pent up sexual energy, many christian females are among the MOST likely to give it up as quickly as possible.
He's not saying they are inherently more moral, he's encouraging them to strive towards an ideal outside their default nature.
I'd agree that Christian girls are more pent up and probably hornier than their non-saved friends, but those are biological results as a consequence of a choice they make, not some pre-disposed condition from being a Christian.
I don't think this is oversimplified at all. It's a good point that happens to be communicated through Christian media.
Rather, it seems quite oversimplified to judge an argument based on a guy's religion.
I think this is a very insightful lecture. Adulthood as interpreted as what you produce rather than what you consume seems like a good guideline (what do I care how well the lecturer keeps to it, though I would guess he does).
.. yes it is oversimplified, do you think every man enjoys living with their parents? Many people are forced to move back with their parents because they can't find work that pays enough to sustain themselves independently, and historically speaking the independent man living away from his family is an ANOMALY. For most of history people lived in tight nit extended family groups, in india and china it is still common for many generations to live under the same roof for their entire lives.
Modern westerners are so disconnected from how people lived historically it is unreal, the modern norm is an anomalous blip on histories radar.
Most people move back with their folks to pay off their massive debt from post secondary education and SAVE MONEY. It is strictly a financial move for many Most move back out of financial necessity. You really need to look at the statistical data and the nature of the job market in different places.
The man gives stereotypes without addressing underlying socio economic forces driving the changes, typical of stupid religious people who think the status quo is "just dandy".

He's not attacking a
He's not attacking a hard-working guy living at home to pay off debt, he's attacking those doing so out of laziness.
