Japan "Must Boost Immigration," Says Ruling Party Panel

Submitted by Alex Birch on Mon, 06/16/2008 - 18:56.

Japan should tackle its dearth of young people by boosting the number of immigrants to 10 percent of the population, according to a ruling party panel report set to be presented to Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda next week.

Japan faces a bleak future as its population ages faster than that of any other country, and is set to shrink by a third in 50 years if current trends continue.

Foreigners made up less than 2 percent of the nearly 128 million population in late 2006, government statistics show, but many have expressed concern that crime could rise if more immigration was allowed.

So instead of promoting Japanese families to have more children, they should be replaced by immigrants? What's really going on here is that globalization is reaching Japan as well. The politicians run the interest of the corporate managers, who're screaming for cheap work force and a free, international labour market. It will kill the Japanese culture and exploit the Japanese workers, just like what's happening right now in the West.

After all these articles

After all these articles about overpopulation, your urging the Japanese to have more children? I think the general direction the Japanese are going in now is perfect as is. They should continue to have small families for the foreseeable future and avoid inviting massive immigrant populations in. Their economy may suffer from it, but that is a temporary issue when the alternatives (overpopulation; and the environmental destruction that goes with it) would be a much more long-lasting problem.

Demographics

How about we reduce the overpopulation without replacing one ethnic group with another? What do you think the reproductive rate of the immigrants (from the third world) in Japan will be?

This is a question of demographics; you don't increase the number of young people by importing them, unless you want to eradicate the Japanese stock. This doesn't imply overpopulation as a consequence (optimal reproductive rate: 2,1).
