Junk Mail Responsible For Environmental Damage

Submitted by Alex Birch on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 18:54.

It takes more than 100 million trees to produce the total volume of junk mail that arrives in American mailboxes each year—that's the equivalent of clearcutting the entire Rocky Mountain National Park every 4 months.

Junk mail--another ugly byproduct of our commercial society. Instead of letting people participate in community activities, they unite under a lifestyle that's brainwashing their minds through television, ads and media campaigns. The fact that our commercial empire is destroying the environment simply adds to its status of decay.

Reminds me of this:

can't we stop this?

i get junk mail all the time. i don't understand why it's so difficult to tell the post office not to deliver it, or to opt-out. i don't want to throw it on the ground in protest & leave it there, even after i've taken my name off it, because that's simply not constructive. i've already tried contacting some of these companies to tell them to take me off their list but most of it is addressed "resident". i guess i could always put it back in a mailbox as "return to sender" if it doesn't have my name or address on it?

i guess if you got a large enough group together in a community to say no to it, it might work...if only we could get people to agree on something as simple as that, there might be more hope for the more complicated problems out there!

Truth. I had a part time job

Truth. I had a part time job in the Direct mail, which produces and spreads junk mail. I was shocked by an amount and a uselessness of the stuff I had to pack.
