Libertarian Failure: Applied Autism

Alex writes that "the real virus with libertarianism is tragedy of the commons". Nah. The real problem with libertarianism is the kind of people it appeals to. C. Van Carter put it best when he wrote that "libertarianism is applied autism", but if you need it spelled out in more detail, here's Kathy Shaidle:

Most libertarians I've met are twitchy overgrown adolescents who are one step up from Trekkers on the appealing personality scale. They are curt, bitchy, brittle and huffy. When you're around a libertarian, it's always Thanksgiving dinner and they're the teenaged cousin with the giant anime collection who's read one book too few and stays coiled in his chair, waiting to blurt out some "shocking" comment he thinks is ahead of its time but is actually two hundred years old, in a boorish, loudmouth Penn Gillette way.

I just don't like them. They bug me.

It doesn't matter if libertarians are right about freedom, Austrian economics, and everything else. Neither they nor their ideas will ever have any influence or power anyway. Even people who agree with them will resist joining them, and there's always the sneaking suspicion that unhappy people with below-average social skills are inaccurate in their understanding other people and society... so you can't really trust their advice, can you?

Watch the below rap video on the subject of economics, ideally with the sound off. It's the reason I got to thinking about all this.

The Hayek character has no confidence and no swagger, and he ain't much to look at, either. Girls aren't into him. Maybe the real F.A. Hayek was like that, and the real John Maynard Keynes was a handsome ladies' man, I don't know. But do you really have to make it that painfully obvious in your propaganda video? Especially considering this is rap which has no use for losers, values swagger and allows a lot more blatant self-aggrandizement than other music genres (probably the main reason why I love working in the hip-hop scene - I don't have to be subtle). A lot of money went into this video, and it's done quite well, but that money is pretty much wasted because "we are a bunch of losers with sound arguments" is not a good message to send to anyone except, well, losers.

Okay

Iconoclast sez:

I like how my previous comment wasn't accepted, but whatever.

Anyways, though I disagree with the premise of this article, I have to say, if this video was reality, I'd rather hang out with Keynes than aspie Hayak. I ignored the video prior to my comments, but I keep seeing this video and it disgusts me.

I would prefer Martin to attack ideas based on ideas and not based on what some adherents masturbate to in the future, though.

I agree Martin has a point --- I'd just wish my original post was accepted -- but I'd rather it not be seen as a law or an extremely commonplace phenomenon.

Fuck, I get laid less than a dead cat in winter, but even this video disgusts me.

what?

If this is the reason why you don't like libertarianism then I recommend reading about it some more.

If libertarians have had no influence then how do you explain the prominence of market economies? I mean 'libertarian' is just a word that the Americans came up with because 'liberal' in their country referred to the left. The thoughts of Ricardo, Malthus etc. have profoundly influenced the world we live in. Milton Friedman's thoughts created neo-liberalism. etc. etc.

The economics of Keynes on the other hand lead to high taxes and stagflation.

Really

The main problem with libertarianism is that you guys like it a lot but in the end believe that some form of "wisdom-based hierarchy" (those are my words in scare quotes) is necessary in controlling the stupid population.

Hence the attacking it on some valid points that don't attack the idea itself, only on some of the followers.

Excellent articles.

Reminds me of way back when I was working on third shift at Wal-Mart. I had to work with a co-worker from hell for awhile: lazy, unreliable, incompetent, insolent. But you know what? He got away with murder. Why? His social skills were through the roof: likable (on a surface level), talkative, laid back, funny, and with a confidence and swagger tree growing in his backyard.

Eventually, after I had moved on from Wally World, I found out that his more negative aspects finally caught up with him and he got fired. However, the fact remains that seeing him in action is what ultimately got me to realize I had to get my act together social-wise. Considering how much more happy and satisfied I am now, I'd probably buy the goddamn bastard a beer if I ever saw him again.

I dislike libertarians too

Although your characterization of them is somewhat generalized. Here in New York City, we don't really have the Ayn Randian types who scream "statist!" in your face every five minutes, but you do have banker types who cling to that fantasy to justify not only their exploitive economic practices by their very ungentlemanly treatment of women.

Most of them, in my experience, are licentious perverts.

But anyhow, I liked the video. The men aren't intended to represent the actual characters per se - but their respective effects on the economy. Keynes' view is indeed quite sexy in its allure, while Hayek is virtually unknown - even amongst so-called conservatives who should have read The Road to Serfdom at some point in their lives.

It's not about characterization

The underpinnings of Libertarian philosophy speak to a fundamental lack of understanding of human nature. Libertarians are people that genuinely wish to be left alone, and believe others wish the same and it's in everyone's best interest.

They are shut off from the rest of the world and see it as natural and correct.

all current idelogies suffer from a fundamental

lack of understanding of human nature as it really exists in the real world, and not simply on a piece of a paper. Libertarians are simply more obnoxious about it because they are so far off the mark while portraying themselves as the most logical, reasonable and ethical.
