Spring got a late start this year around my parts but it's finally time to start mowing grass. Because most of my garden is dedicated to growing food and there's only enough grass for a grill and a half dozen people I never bothered to buy any powered equipment to mow it. I'm not motivated by preference for the green or natural, I'm just too cheap to buy a trimmer or mower and too lazy to learn to use it, so I still mow the grass with a scythe. My generation learned to do that as part of growing up, but the kids these days...

It's not hard to get some old unwanted scythe from relatives and friends. Sharpening it is easy, but the blade will probably need to be flattened, meaning you'll need to find a blacksmith or farmer who knows what he's doing. Or you could buy a new blade, snath and whetstone, of course. It'll cost more than a cheap electric trimmer, though.

Once you got your scythe, you'll have to adjust it and get the motion down. I'll spare myself the trouble of writing about it, as others have already done a good job. Video is especially useful for getting the posture and motion down, and I recommend starting with this one without any grass as the great demonstration of the basics.
