It's curious that some people will play damn near any style of music, while others are only interested in playing rock or bluegrass or whatever. I've never really understood these "specialists", but I'm trying to, and I think I'm finally getting an idea of what they're about. I realized this while explaining to someone that classical training is by far the best preparation for playing a broad range of styles because you are prepared to play music in all keys across the entire range of the instrument written over several centuries in vastly different styles. I was met with a blank stare and an explanation that some people just never want or need to play anything that would be in C# minor.
I remembered reading somewhere that sadomasochist conventions are full of middle-aged white folk who need the whips and chains to make up for the fact that their sex drives are diminishing. Young people with raging hormones might be just as turned on by whipping, but they just don't need to bother with it, definitely not to the extent of heading to a convention of the like-minded. So, people who are only interested in sex while getting whipped or only interested in sex with skinny blondes will on average have lower sex drives than those who will do damn near anybody at any time. No one's seriously going to argue that sluts don't have high sex drives. Picky eaters don't like food as much as omnivorous gluttons. Similarly, people who are only interested in playing music in a specific style probably just don't get as much pleasure from playing music as those who even enjoy playing things they think are crap.
There's nothing wrong with not finding a particular activity or aspect of life terribly interesting, but recognizing that some people are like this should prevent some confusion and a few blank stares.
