Even the most progressive of liberals eventually face a dilemma: What if a liberal reform helps to undermine the very foundation that ensures that liberal reforms are possible? This is what Europe right now is tackling during its modern age struggle with Islam. We want to be multicultural and democratic at the same time, so we spend all of our resources on creating a moderate, Westernized version of Eastern Islam.
The Conservatives have long said this will not work. Maybe they're pessimists. Looking at the incidents in Bali, Madrid, London and Malmö, it doesn't require much to remain a pessimist about Islamic reform. The real problem starts when our fear of going back to WWII-ish nationalism results in Europe pushing back its foundation: Christian morality, Roman law and Greek philosophy.
This is why even the most progressive of leftist-leaning liberals need to take Conservatism seriously. When the foundation to a society is under compromise (should we ban right wing parties? should we ban criticism against religion? should we limit our freedom of speech when some group feels offended?), further reforms threaten the whole point of reform in the first place.
Americans observe how Europe is caving in on its own civilization. Europe does no longer possess the will and power to defend its core values. That's why Americans are now turning against Obama, because they (rightfully) suspect Obamarama politics is the European answer to America's long standing Conservative and Constitutional position. The problem is that liberals, even the best of them, has yet to realize the full significance of an anti-Conservative political climate.
There’s not going to be an LIGFY next week, so you better make this one last. New blood first: Chic Noir gives surprising accurate dating rules for men. Michael Wears a Hat states the benefits men get from cradle robbing. Thras critiques Half Sig...
Liberal paradox
... is about population quality, and that many liberals themselves have never read a shred of anything about history to temper theit compassion, many on the left and who are liberal are compasionate to the point of insanity but let's not forget without such people north american and european middle class would not exist, we'd all be slaves working 12 hour days/7 days a week, child labor and all for shit wages.
It's all well and good to be an armchair historian but history is complex, socialism and communism didn't rise for nothing, they rose out of reel human oppression and suffering, the problem is human beings are not good enough in terms of character and mental fortitude for socialism/communism, this is known as the agent principle problem, where the agent will tend to it's interests over looking out for the interests of others. I doubt you would want to take us back to 1800-1900 if you believe "ye good old conservative times" where there was little to no market interference.
Truth is the smart Euro/westernized populations are not breeding as fast as the ignorant and worthless cultures out there, this is really more about world demographics and the state of mankind in it's ignorance then ideology.
This is about evolution of man in terms of planetary history, perhaps 1200 years down the line everyone will be a socialist due to genetic engineering or technological breakthrough enabling a vast reduction scarcity moving to a post scarcity world.
Artificial intelligence is coming and the combination of it with hybrid models is going to displace Mankind v1.0.
From a long term galactic perspective, human beings are going to have to transform their descendents to survive in this universe, our sun will one day be gone regardless of our trite little spats on this planet at the present time.
Most people's scope of history is far too limited unfortunately.
