Turn Off Your Virtual World, Turn On Reality

Submitted by Alex Birch on Mon, 05/05/2008 - 22:11.

Tune out, turn off and get away from addictive electronics for 24 hours on May 3 and enjoy the outdoors.

That's the message from organizers of the second annual global Shutdown Day who say using computers, televisions and electronic gadgets is having a negative impact on society.

"People are failing to socialize with each other and they are becoming outcasts, they are becoming more and more introverted," said Montreal-based Shutdown Day co-founder Ashutosh Rajekar in an interview.

The electronics isn't the problem; lack of realistic values and meaningful ideals is. However, these people are 100 % right: We need to stop hiding behind our TV:s, computers, cell phones and moral virtual realities. Turn off your entertainment and discover the world outside your window; it's more beautiful than what you might think.

Sorry didnt read this post

LAWL, my ideas will be scrutinized by the administration before posting? I am not a troll, I am here to inspire actual engagement with the topics. How then shall we philosophize with a hammer? Bollocks on the mods: speak, debate, talk, and engage the thoughts, how shall we proceed if they merely moderate our public ideas?

Perhaps, untamed nature is a wonderful teacher. But what should be done with all this conflict. Surely an enlightened man is a fisher of minds; an eroding wall will teach the same lessons as a fallen tree, a weed show s the same truths as a fallen business. While I fully support sustainable living in my life, through gardening and careful purchaches, we still need to discard the ideal of plants, and realize the same truths are evident to awakened minds regardless of environment. Everything exposes reality, not just biological machinery. Stop listening to the SEKRET UNIVERSE OF LIEF, and start working with the people you interact with day to day. This whole thing makes me partially ill. SRSLY

Another problem is kids growing up in urban environments may not even once see untamed, unbalanced nature for what it is. They have parks and maybe backyards. But I know from personal experience, having grown up in New York City and witnessed this decay of value, that kids who are only exposed to buildings, cement, their electronics, etc. see a serious lack of meaning in nature and the environment.
