What Friends Are For

Although I share some aspects of Martin's nerd hating, I am not from a peasant background and have friends only among the middle class. It is still worth to emphasize that being too nerdy in general about anything will effectively lower your social status, except if you make something fun of it (at my dorm I am known as "the Hulk," because I eat all the time and throw chairs around when I'm happy).

To the story: for several months now I've watched the classic nerdy love story unfold before my eyes. Nerdy, cute girl is being stalked constantly by nerdy guy. He wants her so bad any man can smell it in the air, yet all he dares to do is to play thumb games with her. At first it's kind of cute, then it's just pathetic, because he knows what every man knows: if you don't take risks, you can't win anything. Me and a couple of other guys have bullied him now and then for it, because we like him and the girl, but nothing happens.

Today I think I made him change his mind. It was easy. I simply walked up to him when he was alone and said: "It's one month from now. You see her in the living room. She's hugging a guy in the sofa. They're making out. He's stroking her back..no wait, he's stroking her ass. Suddenly you come in. She looks at you, smiles, says hi nervously. The guy doesn't even look at you, he just continues to fondle with her hair. They continue to make out while moaning. Then you go into your room and lock the door. Repeat at least ten times a month."

The look on his face was priceless. Tomorrow he'll ask her out, or he'll die wishing he did.

You, sir, ...

....are an evil man.

And, perhaps, the best friend he ever had.

Hat's off to you, sir.

Dorm

Alex is a college student?

Tip of the hat

...to you, sir.

Growth

The difference between you and Martin is that you have the capabiity of recognizing higher truths, if someone comes along and adds to a discussion you will integrate the other persons insight at least to some extent into yourself, while others less gifted will not and defend their ego rather then silently acknowledging and incorporating the excellence of the insight. This may also have to do with the fact that you're a dad, and having kids has a way of accelerating your maturity and ending your career as an all knowing asshole rather quickly,

Having the capacity for growth is the most important aspect being able to judge whether something is of value or not and this requires experience, talent AND the capacity for growth, without all three you're stuck in shallow egoism and quasi delusions.

No human being has a monopoly on the truth and the capacity for human arrogance and pride in believing one has all the answers is one of the worsts forms of weakness.

hilarious

awesome that "anon" thinks being a father quells the ego problem in many people. ever taken a look around at all the abuse, generally poor parenting, and idiocy among today's dads?

people actually give me props for being able to put my own child to sleep properly when he's upset, to give my wife a break. this isn't me playing the role of wife in the family, it's me knowing my child.

anyway, I guess the point is, maybe sometimes parenting can change one's perspective, but should it? my perspective was always that i'd be a good father because i would protect my children to the death but also dont' plan on raising them in a bubble - but rather teach them about real life, about nature, and about humanity's faults as well as our successes. most of the rest comes from genetics and a loving environment.

Always will be idiots.

Yes I have looked around at today's parents... but I have also witnessed parenting changing people from my own experience with other people who've I've observed in my own life. My post was about the capacity for growth, most people do not have that, I'd even venture to say some people here at corrupt are among the group of idiots they criticize.

dad?

I don't think Alex has any kids.

Frank

Sorry I confused one of franks posts with Alex with frank, I believe it was frank that was talking about his kids.
