"We estimate total bycatch of 44,593 red drum in the released bycatch during the 2024 season," read the LGL study. Of the 44,593 bycatch redfish that were released, 22,805 or a little more than 50 percent were released alive. So 21,788 dead released redfish plus another 8,354 dead retained redfish equals 30,142 total deceased. In other words, 67.6 percent of bycatch redfish die out there.
